Capitola Community Information

Capitola residents take pride in their seaside community. The city is rich in traditions and boasts an interesting history. It is generally regarded as the state’s first seaside resort, a claim backed by an 1883 promotional publication that described it as “the oldest camping ground on the Pacific Coast.” Capitola hosts a number of events and festivals throughout the year. From May through September, residents can enjoy the Art at The Beach festival every other Sunday or the Twilight Concerts series each Wednesday in Esplanade Park. July brings the annual Wharf to Wharf Race. In late August and early September, the Begonia Festival, Nautical Parade, Fishing Derby and Row Boat Race take place. October brings the spooky Halloween Parade and the Howl-o-ween Canine Masquerade Party. In December, watch out for the Surfin’ Santa at Main Beach.

If that’s not enough, stop by the Capitola Art and Wine Festival held every September. This free festival—which combines art, wine, music and food in Capitola Village by the Sea—is a great way to entertain the entire family. More than 200 artists and 14 wineries participate in the event and entertainment is provided on three different stages. Residents can enjoy tasting wines from a variety of Santa Cruz Mountain wineries and indulge in delicious gourmet food from local restaurants and caterers. Come and experience fine arts, crafts and music, all just steps away from the beach.

If you’re looking for fun in the sun, Capitola City Beach is always a favorite! It has been recognized by numerous magazines as one of the top ten beaches on the West Coast. Located in the heart of Capitola Village, the beach area features unique shops and restaurants as well as a number of exciting beach activities. With all there is to do, the family is guaranteed to enjoy an afternoon of swimming, surfing, kite flying, volleyball or simply relaxing on the sand. New Brighton State Beach and Seacliff State Beach are also nearby and provide many recreational activities.

For those who enjoy fishing, the Capitola Wharf is open from sunrise to sunset and boat rentals are available. Avid surfers will enjoy the dozens of great surfing spots along the coast near Capitola, such as Pleasure Point and the Capitola Jetty.
